Launched in 2012, the ICAS Foundation aims to support academically talented young people from disadvantaged communities into university through the provision of mentoring and financial assistance.
- Identify and support academically talented young people in need to discover their true potential.
- To mobilise the ICAS membership as donors, mentors and facilitators.
- Secure sufficient funding that makes it possible for us to award bursaries of up to £2,500 per annum to individuals whose parents or guardians earn under a certain threshold.
- Support students in securing a suitable internship during summer breaks to build skills and experience needed to enter the workplace
Who we help
The ICAS Foundation supports academically talented young people from disadvantaged communities who wish to go to university by helping them overcome particular financial barriers which would otherwise deter them from studying accountancy or a finance related degree.
This may include, but is not limited to:
- School leavers who have been accepted for a university course studying accountancy or finance but can clearly demonstrate the difficulty they have in meeting direct education- related expenses such as books, library fees and travel
- College students who are transferring to university to complete their degree
- University students studying accountancy or finance related disciplines who, through no fault of their own, find themselves in difficult financial circumstances
How we are funded
ICAS Foundation relies on voluntary income -
- Through donations from CAs who are members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS), which is a professional body for over 19,000 world class business men and women who work in the UK and in more than 100 countries around the world.
- Through partnerships with major corporates
- Major donations from individuals
Who we are
The ICAS Foundation was launched in 2012 and aims to support students studying Accountancy or Finance at University.
The ICAS Foundation is managed by a board of Trustees.
Appointment of Trustees
The Trustees are appointed for a term of up to three years and are eligible for re-appointment thereafter for a maximum of three consecutive terms save in exceptional circumstances where a fourth term is permitted. The minimum number of Trustees is five, maximum eleven.
Two Trustees are appointed from a list nominated by The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS): otherwise the appointment of the Trustees is wholly independent of ICAS.
Sir David Tweedie
Sir David was educated at Edinburgh University and qualified as a Scottish Chartered Accountant in 1972. He became Technical Director of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS) in 1978. He became the Chairman of the UK Accounting Standards Board (ASB) in 1990 and in January 2001 was appointed the first Chairman of the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) and led the Board for ten years. He is a Fellow of the Judge Business School at Cambridge University and a visiting Professor of Accounting in the Management School at Edinburgh University. He has received honorary degrees from nine British Universities. He was knighted in 1994 and was inducted into the Accounting Hall of Fame in 2013. Sir David became President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland in April 2012 (until April 2013) and Chairman of the International Valuation Standards Council (IVSC) in October 2012.
Gordon Jack retired as an audit partner in PwC in 2005, having led the Glasgow audit practice for a number of years. He has served on numerous ICAS committees, was a member of ICAS Council from 2001 to 2008 and chaired the Executive Board of ICAS from 2004 to 2007 and is currently Chair of ICAS TPE exam board. Gordon is an honorary governor at the Glasgow Academy and a member of Glasgow Caledonian University’s Court and Finance and General Purposes Committee.
Ken Cunningham has spent most of his working life in education having held a range of school posts as well as those of adviser, inspector, Chief Examiner and in local authority directorate. He was appointed General Secretary of School Leaders Scotland in 2008. He has Chaired and been a member of a range of Government Task and Steering Groups including, Chair of Educational Broadcasting Council for Scotland. Ken is Chair of the Board of Trustees for the charity Children 1 st and a member of the Qualifications Committee of SQA, and the SCHOLAR Advisory Board. He was awarded a CBE in recognition of his services to Scottish education in 2002.
Gerry Devlin is currently the Executive Director of both the Kinharvie Institute of Facilitation and the Marist Brothers (Educational Trust). His business experience is complemented by further studies and training in leadership, psychological tools for individual/organisational development, counselling and supervision. He has worked with a wide range of organisations in the public, voluntary and commercial sectors and is particularly committed to the support and development of not for profit organisations.
Stewart Falconer was appointed Dean of the Business School at Edinburgh Napier University and maintained an academic interest in the marketing of financial services with a research focus on the influence of trust on buying behaviour within the sector before retiring in June 2016. Prior to moving into academic life in 1996, Stewart worked for a number of years within Scottish Banking where he held various senior managerial positions in the legal, credit and human resources areas of the business. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers in Scotland and a Chartered Banker.
Prof Elizabeth Gammie
Prof. Elizabeth Gammie is Head of the Business School with teaching interests in Taxation and Financial Accounting at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen. Elizabeth is responsible for developing links with the professional accountancy bodies and is a past member of the Technical Policy Board, the TPE Exam Board and Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland. She is on the Expert Review Group and acts as an external examiner for the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants. She is a research staff member within the Governance and Society theme of the Institute for Management, Governance and Society (IMaGeS) Research Institute.
Sir Andrew Cubie
Sir Andrew Cubie CBE FRSE studied law at Edinburgh University. He was in private practice as a solicitor in Edinburgh for most of his career, specialising in corporate law. He taught at Edinburgh University and has also held, throughout his career, non-executive directorships in public and private companies. He was the Chairman of the CBI in Scotland, gaining a reputation for independence of thought and in consequence in 1999 chaired the Cubie Committee into student finance in Scotland, which led to the abolition of tuition fees in Scottish Universities and the creation of the Scottish graduate endowment.
In 2001, he was awarded a CBE for services to business and education in Scotland. Sir Andrew has subsequently been involved in a range of public reviews and remains very much involved in higher education issues and third sector governance.
Geraldine is a Chartered Accountant and a former member of the Ethics Committee of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland. Geraldine is a non-executive Director of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo (Charities) Limited and a Non-executive Director of its trading company where she chairs the Audit Committee, a Deputy Chair and Governor of Kilgraston School, and a Trustee of the Golden Charter Trust and Chair of the Audit Committee.
Geraldine was formerly the Director of The Prince’s Trust in Scotland and a former Partner in Springfords Chartered Accountants.
