If you're a CA, you can get involved as a volunteer with the ICAS Foundation programme by mentoring a university student studying accountancy or finance who is enrolled on our programme.
Our mentoring scheme matches every student with an experienced Chartered Accountant, who can offer guidance and encouragement throughout their time at university. Our mentors have a wide range of relevant experience, and our mentoring scheme is designed to ensure that, as far as possible, our students are matched with a mentor who can relate to their learning experience and career ambitions.
"As a mentor, the students you meet through the ICAS Foundation have tremendous ability and enthusiasm and are eager to hear about the world of business and finance. They enjoy picking up the context I can give them about the professional world of accounting and ways of trading, as well as studying, leading and contributing to society. I can wholeheartedly recommend becoming a mentor."
John Brebner CA, ICAS Foundation Mentor
How to Apply
If you’re interested in becoming an ICAS Foundation mentor, read the ICAS Foundation Mentor Volunteer Role Description to find out more.
You can complete the online mentor application form here. We aim to respond to all mentor application forms within five working days.
We are currently welcoming expressions of interest from across Scotland, Lancaster and Birmingham to support students in the 2024-25 academic year.
What's Involved
Our mentors meet up with their student mentee usually once a month to discuss the student's university studies, their career development and the mentor's own experience. Mentors generally give around 1-2 hours of their time each month, including any additional communications and keeping a record of their meetings up to date.
Generally, the majority of our mentoring meetings take place face to face, although we also encourage mentors and mentees to use video calls where this is helpful due to time constraints or distance. We have a small remote mentoring programme for students based at universities where there are no CAs in the local area (depending on availabilty).
